Life After a Cochlear Implant: Why Rehab Matters
A cochlear implant is a life-changing electronic device that bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear to provide sound signals directly to the brain. It is a brilliant medical marvel, but activating the device is only the first step in the journey to hearing.
Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sounds, cochlear implants send electrical pulses that the brain must learn to interpret as sound. This process is not automatic. The brain needs structured training to associate these new electrical signals with meaningful language and sounds.
This is where Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT) and post-implant rehabilitation become critical. For young children born deaf, AVT helps them learn to listen, speak, and communicate naturally, allowing them to join mainstream schools and realize their full potential.
For adults who lost their hearing later in life, rehab helps accelerate the adjustment period, helping them recognize voices, enjoy music, and communicate confidently in noisy environments.
Rehabilitation includes listening exercises, mapping sessions (where the implant settings are customized by an audiologist), and home-based practice guided by family members. At SRI Speech & Hearing Clinic, our certified AVT therapists support patients through every stage of implant rehabilitation.
